The cornet and the trumpet are brothers in one family: same tube length, same fingerings, same range — differing in just two things: a more conical body and a deeper cup.
Those two differences make it audibly rounder, softer, darker. It is the cleanest demonstration anywhere that the bore decides the colour: same pitch, same playing method, only the shape of the tube differs.
| Classification | Value |
|---|---|
| HS class | Aerophone · lip-vibrated |
| Sub-type | Cup mouthpiece (deeper) · three piston valves · more conical than a trumpet · B♭ transposing instrument |
| Family | Western · Brass (trumpet family) |
| Bayin | Not applicable — a Chinese system; the cornet is outside it |
⚠️ One point about the name: the historical "cornet" is often not today's cornet. The Renaissance and Baroque cornetto is a wooden or bone pipe with finger holes — a lip-vibrated instrument with holes, not a valved brass. On a programme or an early-music recording, "cornet" nearly always means the cornetto. The test is easy: valves mean cornet, holes mean cornetto.
Three brothers: one conicality apart
One causal chain (the same one as on the alto flute page):
the earlier the body flares (more conical) → the harder upper harmonics are to excite → less high-frequency content → the sound moves from "bright" towards "soft" and "dark". Mouthpiece depth pushes in the same direction (a deep cup also damps the top).
So the three brothers are three stops on a continuum, not three instruments: trumpet → cornet → flugelhorn, brightness falling and softness rising in order. A player switches instruments, not disciplines.
From wind band to early jazz
Why was the cornet so central in wind bands? A wind band mixes woodwinds and brass: the cornet's rounder, softer tone blends with the woodwinds where a trumpet would cover them. That is also why British brass bands still field cornets as their lead — often in place of trumpets.
And why did jazz move on? Jazz bands grew bigger and louder through the 1920s–30s (more saxophones, more volume), and the trumpet's brightness and projection became an advantage. The cornet did not disappear; it went from lead to colour.
Range
⚠️ 降 B 调短号是移调乐器 —— 记谱比实音高大二度。谱面写 F♯3–C6,实际出声 E3–B♭5 —— 与小号完全相同。三兄弟的音域与指法都一致,差别只在音色。
- Sounding E3–B♭5 — identical to the trumpet. That is what "the three brothers differ only in colour" means concretely.
- The working register is C4–C6, the same.
- Because it is softer, its middle-low register (C4–G4) is used more than on a trumpet — that is where its roundness shows most.
Timbre, and how to hear it
Four cues:
1. Round, soft, slightly dark. Beside a trumpet it lacks the metallic edge and gains a woodier layer. 2. It does not blare. At the same dynamic it does not turn harsh — a property of the conical bore. 3. It blends. It mixes easily with woodwinds and with horns, and seldom sticks out. 4. It sounds better up close. Its projection is a little less than a trumpet's, which makes it more moving in a quiet or chamber setting.
⚠️ On the audio: the General MIDI set has no cornet. A trumpet sample is playing above — it suggests the register and the manner, but not the cornet's roundness.
Playing techniques
The technique is identical to the trumpet (same valves, same fingerings); the differences are in air and what it is used for:
- Better suited to legato and lyrical lines — the round tone makes long phrases sing.
- Easier to play softly: a conical bore does not fall apart at low volume, so the cornet does better in quiet passages.
- Less "blare" at full power: when extreme brightness and projection are wanted, composers choose a trumpet.
- The same mutes apply, though they bite less than on a trumpet.
The family
| Instrument | Conical? | Mouthpiece | Timbre | Historical role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trumpet | least (mostly cylindrical) | shallow | bright, focused | orchestra / jazz lead |
| Cornet | moderate | medium | round, soft, a little dark | band lead / early-jazz soloist |
| Flugelhorn | most | deep | soft, dark, voice-like | jazz colour / band soft voice |
| Cornetto | — | — | bright with a vocal edge | Renaissance, wooden, finger holes, not this family |
That last row is the one to remember: same name, vaguely similar shape, but the cornetto is a wooden, hole-stopped pipe — a "lips + holes" approach from three centuries before the valved cornet.
History
| Period | State |
|---|---|
| 15th–17th c. | the cornetto: wood or bone, finger holes, lip-vibrated — unrelated to the later cornet, but the name carried over |
| 1820s | after the valve, makers build a more conical trumpet variant → the valved cornet appears |
| 19th c. | quickly becomes the lead of wind bands and brass bands; also enters opera houses and dance halls |
| 1900s–1920s | the principal solo instrument of early jazz (New Orleans) |
| 1920s–40s | coexists with the trumpet; as bands grew, the trumpet's brightness was preferred |
| After the 1940s | retreats to wind and British brass bands; in jazz it becomes a colour |
| Late 20th c. onward | still the lead in wind and brass bands; occasional use in jazz and pop |
Common misconceptions
- "A cornet is just a trumpet with a different name." Same family, same fingerings, but different conicality and cup depth → audibly rounder and softer. A textbook case of bore deciding colour.
- "The cornet has a smaller range." Identical (both written F♯3–C6 / sounding E3–B♭5).
- "A cornet is a cornetto." ⚠️ The historical cornetto is a different instrument: wood or bone, with finger holes. On a programme, check which one — in early music it is almost always the cornetto.
- "The cornet is obsolete." It remains the lead of wind and British brass bands, where its blending matters more than a trumpet's brightness.
- "Cornet and trumpet are interchangeable." The fingerings are, the sound is not: when a composer writes for cornet, the round warmth is the point; a trumpet would cover the woodwinds.
Next
The last of the three brothers is the flugelhorn — most conical, softest — which takes this brightness gradient to its end.
To jump to another layer of brass, go to the trombone (no valves, a slide changing the length continuously) or the horn (even more conical, on a funnel mouthpiece). :::
