This page is about a "new" instrument: born in the 1920s — among the youngest of all Chinese instruments.
Its most distinctive feature first: it did not "add an instrument"; it changed an ensemble's character.
Guangdong music's early line-up was called the "hard bow": erxian, zhutihu, sanxian, yueqin and transverse flute — a "five-piece stand" whose bright, high, ringing sound earned it the name "hard-bow combination." After the gaohu arrived: gaohu, yangqin, qinqin, dongxiao and yehu formed the "soft-bow five," "better able to express delicate shifts of feeling."
⭐⭐ Rule 51: a new instrument turned a whole ensemble from hard to soft. The sources put it plainly: "behind Guangdong music's evolution from 'hard' to 'soft' lies musicians' spirit of blending and embracing change." — it did not simply displace the erxian; it gave the whole genre a new way of breathing.
| Classification | Value |
|---|---|
| HS class | chordophone · bowed · definite pitch |
| Sub-type | soprano erhu (smaller box · usually round skin and sound window · traditional Cantonese form: dragon-head round box, no base) · two strings · tuned G4–D5, a fourth above the erhu · played seated, box gripped between the legs |
| Family | Chinese · bowed (the lead of Guangdong music and Cantonese opera; also called yuehu) |
| Bayin | silk (丝) |
How it was "built": new strings, new posture
⭐ Its birth took two moves — and both came from another instrument:
| Move | From where | Result |
|---|---|---|
| New strings | the violin | "erhu's silk strings changed to the violin's steel" → brighter, more penetrating |
| New posture | gripped playing | "played with the box gripped between the legs", held vertically on the right thigh |
| New tuning | — | "with the fourth-up tuning" → G4–D5, a fourth above the erhu |
⭐ And two people made the connection: "Lü Wencheng, an erhu player, met the violinist Situ Mengyan, and each influenced the other" — one played erhu, one played violin; the gaohu is what those two hands produced.
Why it is gripped
⭐ The most physical — and cleverest — detail on this page:
"The thighs grip the skin and sound window to control tone and volume, and to reduce the wolf tone."
- Gripping = pressurising the box: skin partly covered, resonance damped → volume and colour become adjustable by hand — or rather by leg;
- ⭐ The "wolf tone" is an old string-instrument problem: a pitch that hits the body's resonance and squawks — gripping the skin presses that resonance peak down.
- So the posture is not a habit but a functional design: other huqins colour the tone with the hands; this one also has a leg to do it with.
Its timbre was grown from a dialect
⭐ The line worth remembering:
"Delicate slides and rich ornamentation make the gaohu's sound fit the rise and fall of Cantonese tones, holding Lingnan's warm everydayness."
— Cantonese is a tonal language, and the gaohu's slides and ornaments play exactly that contour. Unlike the banhu, born to "roar," or the erhu, long on "lament": here a dialect's tones were turned into a timbre.
⭐ Compare rule ㊽ ("an instrument can have dialects"): the dombra is one instrument growing different shapes in different places; the gaohu goes further — a local accent grew an instrument outright.
Range
Common misconceptions
- "The gaohu is just a higher erhu." ⚠️ It is not an erhu tuned up: smaller box · round skin and window · violin steel strings · gripped posture · tuning a fourth higher — a redesigned instrument.
- "It is an old instrument." ⚠️ It dates to the 1920s, created by Situ Mengyan and his student Lü Wencheng, replacing the erxian — one of the youngest Chinese instruments.
- "Gripping the box is just a habit." ⚠️ It is a function: tone and volume control, and wolf-tone reduction.
- "It only plays cheerful music." ⚠️ It is famous for bright, clear playing, but *Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake* is a moonlit reverie — it excels at "bright," not "noisy."
- "Orchestral arrangements would switch it to erhu." ⚠️ On the contrary: Peng Xiuwen's arrangements of *Step by Step* and *Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon* "kept the gaohu part, without substituting the erhu."
Timbre, and how to hear it
Three cues:
1. Hear the brightness. "Clear and bright" — steel strings and a small box make a natural pair with the erhu's warmth. 2. Hear the slides. "Delicate slides and rich ornamentation" — its flavour lives in the left hand, which is exactly where it "fits Cantonese tones." 3. Hear the "point-line dialogue." In *Step by Step* the woodblock taps points while the strings draw lines — points and lines are the skeleton of its most famous piece (the woodblock has its own page here).
The family
| Instrument | Register | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| Gaohu | highest (G4–D5) | this page; yuehu, the lead of Guangdong music and Cantonese opera |
| Erhu | middle (D4–A4) | ⭐ the gaohu is a modified erhu: new strings, box, posture, up a fourth |
| Zhonghu | lower (G3–D4) | the same family, one step down (the next page) |
| Banhu | high and bright | contrast: the banhu uses a wooden face to roar; the gaohu uses skin to shine |
| Hard-bow five | — | erxian, zhutihu, sanxian, yueqin, flute — ⭐ the group it replaced |
| Soft-bow five | — | ⭐ gaohu, yangqin, qinqin, dongxiao, yehu — where it sits as the lead |
