midicnInstruments 中文

Inside the hulusi hides a part few other instruments have: the drone pipes.

They have no finger holes and play no melody — each sounds one sustained tone, alongside the tune. And when the player does not want them, they can be plugged.

⚠️ The melody pipe sings; the drone pipes hum along — and the humming has an on-off switch. ⭐⭐ Rule ㉝: the drone pipes make harmony into a switchable part — an instrument that carries its own backup singers. Compare rule ⑧ (the sheng): the sheng's answer is "one reed for every note" — any note can be chorded; the hulusi's answer is "melody plus a fixed tone." Two Chinese answers to "how many notes can one instrument sound at once." And it carries a second name — "the instrument that can talk."

Bayingourd (匏) — the air chamber is a gourd

One gourd, three bamboo pipes

Hulusi — one gourd, three bamboo pipes The melody pipe sings; the drones hold one tone — reeds hidden in the gourd Mouthpiece (gourd stem) Gourd: air chamber Drones: no holes A bronze reed per pipe Melody pipe: 7 holes About 30 cm long, in high, middle and low types; the Achang form: 6 / 50 / 33 and 17 cm pipes. The drones carry reeds but no holes — their whole life is one sound. ⚠️ Schematic; the seventh, rear hole not drawn.

Three points:

1. The gourd is both chamber and resonator. The whole gourd stays intact — and every ethnic name writes it in (next section). 2. Three pipes, clear division. The longest, middle melody pipe has 7 holes (6 front, 1 back) and carries the tune; the two drone pipes "hold reeds but no finger holes" — their whole job is one sustained tone. 3. ⭐ One reed per pipe. Each pipe holds a tongue-shaped bronze reed inside the gourd — the same free-reed class as the sheng. But the hulusi's reed is made very thin with a tapering tip, so its "vibration is influenced by the air column, partaking of the soft-reed nature too" — scholars name this use of a bronze reed as a soft one, together with the sheng, one of "the rare exceptions in the world."

The drones: switchable harmony

What the drones do: two flat lines vs one zigzag The drones play no melody — they are a tone that is simply always there Drones open melody drones ×2 some sets drone a fifth apart Drones plugged melody alone — clean, and lonely (open them again when wanted) The Ximeng Wa pipes drone "a perfect fifth apart"; "when not wanted… the drones may be plugged." Other instruments leave harmony to others; the hulusi keeps it at home — with a switch. ⚠️ Schematic: lines indicate moving vs constant, not actual pitches.

⭐ The drone deserves careful reading:

The name: five languages, one sum

The loveliest thing about the hulusi is inside its names — read them side by side:

LanguageNameParsed
DaiBilangdao (also Binanmudao)bi = generic for wind pipes + langdao = gourd
AchangPoliewengpolie = flute + weng = gourd
De'angBulaibu = to blow + lai = gourd
WaBaihongliaobai = generic for reed pipes + hongliao = gourd
Chinesehulu-xiao / hulu-shao / hulu-sihulu = gourd + xiao / si (bamboo)

⭐ No borrowing between them — yet every language performed the same sum: "a pipe word" + "gourd." Each people simply took two ready words in its own tongue. It says what they saw first: a gourd that happens to be a pipe. (Hence names-history item ⑬: one formula, independently true in each language.)

⚠️ And the Chinese name "hulusi" is young: in 1953, a Yunnan cultural team collecting songs in Dehong recorded it as "hulusi" for the first time — before that, it was only a crowd of local names.

Range

C1C2C3C4C5C6C7C8G3G4
Hulusi range — about one octave (indicative)

⚠️ Honestly: the hulusi is traditionally a narrow-range instrument — about an octave. But it wrings that octave for everything: melody + drones + slides, taps, waves and circular breathing. Its ambition is not more notes; it is more flavour.

Where it comes from

PeriodState
pre-Qinits forebear is the hulusheng — a gourd-chested multi-pipe reed instrument
Warring States⭐ the bronze gourd-sheng with a standing ox (Lijiashan tomb 24, Jiangchuan, Yunnan; unearthed 1972) — a gourd-shaped air chamber cast in bronze, over 2,000 years old
migrationsaround Lianghe, Dehong, the hulusheng gradually became "gourd chamber + bamboo pipes" — the hulusi's form
before 1949kept by the Dai, Achang, De'ang, Wa, Bulang; a young man's courting instrument
1953⭐ collected in Dehong; the Chinese name "hulusi" is born
todayprovincial ICH listing for its making (2006); now heard in squares, classrooms and stages
2016Lianghe's water-splashing festival: 1,666 hulusis played at once — a world record

⭐ And its family keeps a living ancestor: the hulusheng, still blown by the Hani, Lahu and Yi (the Lahu saying goes, "when the grain turns gold, the Lahu go wild" — out come the hulushengs and the dancing). The hulusi is this gourd line's "three-pipe" branch.

"The instrument that can talk"

In the Dai villages before 1949, a scene repeated nightly:

A young man walks from village to village with his hulusi, and plays it under the window, behind the house, of the girl he loves — the instrument speaking where words could not. Hence its name: "the instrument that can talk."

Common misconceptions

Timbre, and how to hear it

Three cues:

1. Hear the endlessness. Circular breathing keeps a phrase going for a long time — with the drones underneath, "the breath never stops" is its default state. 2. Hear the thickness. A reed sound wrapped in bamboo — one layer more "fuzzy-edged" than the dizi. 3. Hear the backup. Notice the line under the melody that never moves — that is a drone: that is its built-in band.

⭐ Read the second column: the gourd family and the sheng family answer the same question — "how many notes at once, and how?" — the sheng line says "a reed for every note," the hulusi says "melody plus a drone line," and both grew from that same pre-Qin gourd.

Next

Its next stop is its single-pipe twin —

same reed, same land, same colour, but one pipe only: it can sing note by note, and cannot carry its own backup.
