The kora

An instrument that obeys no single classification, keeping a history that was never written down

⭐⭐ The main line: an instrument that obeys no classification, keeping a history never written down

「The kora doesn't fit into any one category of musical instrument, but rather several, and must be classified as a double-bridged harp-lute.」

⭐⭐ The site's specimen at the boundary of classification: the kora belongs to the harp family and the lute family at once — "The strings run in two divided ranks, characteristic of a double harp", and "strings originate from a string arm or neck and cross a bridge directly supported by a resonating chamber, also making it a lute". ⭐⭐ When one instrument belongs to two families, taxonomy must mint a new name — the double-bridged harp-lute (HS 323-5). (Compare the site at large: the HS five-part system is the hardest classification we use, and the kora is the moment it admits its own insufficiency.)

⭐⭐ One instrument impersonating a whole band

Two hands do three things at once: kumbengo (cyclic bass and fixed accompaniment), birimintingo (improvised melody), plus satanango (vocal praise) — "why a single kora can sound like several instruments".

⭐⭐ The left hand is the bass drum, the right hand the melody (21 strings: 11 left, 10 right) — ⭐⭐ compare the djembe: it takes one drum, three dunun brothers and dancers to make a band; the kora is one player (the two West African instruments mirror each other: one builds a band from many instruments, the other splits one instrument into many). ⭐ And its core is two lines at once: a fixed bass under an improvised run — ⭐⭐ counterpoint between fixed and improvised is one of the gifts African music gave the world (compare rock's riff and solo — the same structure under different names).

⭐⭐ The instrument is an archive: the jali system

「Kora players have traditionally come from jali families (also from the Mandinka tribes) who are traditional historians, genealogists and storytellers who pass their skills on to their descendants.」

⭐⭐ The kora player is not just a musician but four persons: oral historian (genealogies, family, village and kingdom histories, including the Sunjata epic) · praise-singer (singing patrons' and ancestors' names and deeds at naming ceremonies and weddings) · adviser and mediator (mediating between families) · musician (kora, balafon, ngoni). ⭐⭐ And all of it is inherited: "jali status is inherited: you are born into a jali family rather than choosing to become one" — ⭐⭐ compare the djembe's "there are no hereditary restrictions on who may become a djembefola": two instruments of one family, one anyone may play, one only the born can — one spreads by openness, one preserves by blood (the instance "Ancestral Traditions Inherited": instrument and bloodline travel together; "Ten Words of Old Names": a string of names is a genealogy).

⭐⭐ The weight of a name: most West African musicians prefer jali (≈ bard / oral historian) to the French loanword griot — ⭐⭐ once more, name versus reality: a foreign word carries away the original's weight (compare the site's naming lineage: a proverb names the purpose (djembe), a misunderstanding names the history (a cappella), a transliteration names the blood (bili), and a belittled loan names the identity).

⭐⭐ Two ways to keep music alive

The kora reads no score — it maintains a person instead.

⭐⭐ Compare guqin-notation's tablature: the guqin writes its music onto paper, the kora writes its music into a family — one stores text, the other stores blood. ⭐⭐ This is the site's sharpest contrast between record and transmission: reduced-character notation can be printed by the thousand; a recited epic can only be carried generation by generation — so the kora's "editions" live inside people, and the instrument is merely the index. ⭐ The jali surnames (Suso, Kuyateh, Jobarteh, Konteh) are that archive's catalogue.

⭐⭐ Nyenmyemo: an amplifier bolted onto an instrument

The kora carries a strange accessory: the nyenmyemo — a leaf-shaped plate of tin or brass with wire loops round the edge, clamped to the bridge or the top of the neck, producing sympathetic sounds, "serving as an amplifier since the sound carried well into the open air".

⭐⭐ An "amplifier" invented for open-air performance and mounted on the instrument — ⭐⭐ compare the talk box (the mouth as filter) and the 808's speaker killer (bass blowing out cones): in the site's lineage of acoustic compromises, the kora is the only sound that deliberately bolts a resonator plate onto itself (modern koras use a pickup — outdoors become indoors, and the plate retires).

⭐⭐ Origins and two exits

⭐ Mali Empire (13th century) — evolved from ngoni spiked lutes and balafon xylophones; the legend credits Sundiata Keita's jali Balla Fasséké with enlarging a hunter's bow harp into a 21-string marvel; Mansa Musa's 1324 pilgrimage to Mecca carried it outward with returning scholars. ⭐ Earliest written reference: in the 1300s Ibn Battuta noted that the women who accompanied Dugha to perform carried bows that they plucked. ⭐ The Kaabu kingdom (Senegal/Gambia) refined two tunings: silaba (major, for praise) and tomora (for sorrow).

⭐⭐ Two modern exits: ① into the world: Paul Simon's "Graceland" (1986) · Beyoncé's "Black Is King" sampling · Mory Kanté's global hit "Yeke Yeke" · Toumani Diabaté's 72-string symmetrical kora; ② into itself: Sona Jobarteh — "the first female virtuoso from a griot family" — ⭐⭐ a first woman inside an inherited system: she did not leave the bloodline but made the bloodline visible (compare the rare female djembe player who provokes astonishment — ⭐⭐ the two instruments' breakthroughs point opposite ways: the drum says "not you", the kora says "you represent us".)

Kora 「range」 (21 strings in two ranks; combined span C2–C7)

The kora's compass comes from its 21 strings (11 in the left hand for the bass register, 10 in the right for the high voice), spanning roughly C2–C7, with C3–C6 in common use. Its idea of range differs from that of Western keyboard instruments: two thumbs divide the work, the left playing the cyclic bass (kumbengo) and the right the improvised melody (birimintingo) at the same time — so one instrument occupies both the low foundation and the high flourishes, and its compass is a width made of two overlaid lines rather than a stack of single strings. The konso (leather tuning rings on the neck) slides up and down, moving the whole instrument into one of four seven-note scales (close to western major, minor and Lydian); changing mode is a translation of the entire instrument, not a retuning string by string — which is why one kora can play a praise song in silaba and a lament in tomora. The nyenmyemo metal plate adds a bed of sympathetic overtones to the harmonics.
