Pandeiro
Like a tambourine, but not one — a tunable frame drum, the heartbeat of Brazilian rhythm
Related
Fourteen-odd Western percussion instruments are done in this section, and most of them look different from one another.
Only this one looks almost exactly like another one — and is a different instrument.
⭐⭐ This page is the pandeiro — the frame drum of Brazil. One line: like a tambourine, but not one.
| Class | Assignment |
|---|---|
| HS class | Membranophone(single-head frame drum)· with idiophone component(a ring of jingles)· no definite pitch — ⭐ like the tambourine, one instrument across two percussion classes |
| Scope | World instrument(Brazil)· hand frame drum · 「非官方国家乐器」of Brazil |
| Two faces | ⭐⭐ the medieval square double-skinned Adufe vs the Brazilian round single-head drum — same name, the latter descended from the former |
| Also | Percussion(the Western section's 「early/historical」 list · the modern form lives in Brazil) |
⭐⭐ The main line: five differences that take the 「like」 apart
How alike are they? Same family, same outline, same ring of jingles. Put them side by side and five differences hold:
| ⭐ pandeiro | tambourine | |
|---|---|---|
| ① How it is held | ⭐⭐ horizontal(head to the sky) | vertical |
| ② Head tension | ⭐⭐ tunable — 「允许演奏者在高低音之间选择」 | fixed |
| ③ The head's voice | ⭐⭐ the skin sound matters enormously | barely matters(the jingles lead) |
| ④ The skin | removable(swap and tune) | fixed |
| ⑤ The jingles | drier, shorter sustain(cupped platinelas) | more sustained「沙」 |
⭐⭐ Row three is half the story: the tambourine's sound lives in its jingles; the pandeiro's lives in the skin — it is a drum first, with jingles attached.
⭐⭐ The verdict: 「
⭐⭐ One drum, four strokes, a complete groove
A tambourine in an orchestra mostly shakes and taps. The pandeiro does not:
⭐⭐ Thumb, fingertips, heel of the hand, palm — four contacts, four timbres, rotating on one skin: one player is a complete rhythm section(bass from the heel pressed into the head, snap from the fingertips).
⭐⭐ Two modern additions: 「
⭐ The thumb roll is shared with the tambourine — 「
⭐⭐ Two instruments, one name: the square one is five hundred years older
The plan files the pandeiro under 「early/historical instruments」 — with reason, because there used to be two of them:
| ⭐ medieval pandeiro(Adufe) | ⭐ Brazilian pandeiro | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | square | round |
| Heads | double-skinned(often a bell inside the frame) | single |
| Home | Iberia(still played in Portuguese and Spanish villages) | Brazil |
| Era | seen in 13th-century illustrations | modern |
⭐⭐ 「这是潘德罗的原型,南美鼓是它更现代的后裔」— it derives from a Moorish/Arabic instrument; smaller versions survive in North Africa.
⭐⭐ Same family as the saer's 「同名异实」: the Qing 「塞他尔」 was plucked, today's is bowed; the medieval 「潘德罗」 was square and double-skinned, today's is round and single — the name lived on for centuries while the object changed its body.
⭐⭐ The route: a mirror of the Chinese instruments
The bili entered China westward(Kucha → Liangzhou temples → Central Plains folk); the pandeiro walked the other half of the same Moorish route:
「潘德罗源自中东的框鼓,经北非、欧洲与葡萄牙殖民者到达巴西」; the Brazilian pandeiro descends from the pandeireta / pandereta of Spain and Portugal.
⭐⭐ military band → temple → folk(bili); Moor → Iberia → colonists → Brazil(pandeiro). Opposite directions, same structure: once an instrument enters the rhythmic life of a civilization, it never leaves.
⭐⭐ In Brazil: the unofficial national instrument
The grooves it carries: samba · choro · baião · frevo · capoeira — ⭐ 「潘德罗最大的用处大概仍在桑巴与 choro」.
⭐⭐ 「现代潘德罗之父」: Marcos Suzano 「发现了新的演奏技法,把潘德罗应用于 funk、摇滚与电子等各种音乐风格」— a folk frame drum pushed into the rhythm section of electronic music.
⭐ Early pioneers: Jackson do Pandeiro · João da Baiana; choro master Jorginho do Pandeiro.
⭐⭐ Skin vs plastic: a practical fork
The instrument is still made by hand and by factory, and the trade-offs are concrete:
| ⭐ natural skin(goat) | plastic head | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | ⭐ hand-made(artesanal) | factory |
| ⭐⭐ Exclusive | ⭐⭐ real bass tones(impossible on plastic) | stable under high tension |
| ⭐ Weight | as light as possible(the holding hand tires fast) | much heavier |
| Repertoire | choro | samba & pagode |
⭐⭐ Two 「improper」 usages
Jazz and rock drummers picked the pandeiro up, and it grew new seats:
Stanton Moore — 「把潘德罗调低音、发出像落地桶鼓带钹片的声音,装上架子并整合进现代鼓组」;
Sule Greg Wilson(Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Grammy-winning《Genuine Negro Jig》)— 「
⭐⭐ A frame drum from 13th-century Iberia found a new seat in a 21st-century drum kit.
Recap: three sentences on the pandeiro
| Q | A |
|---|---|
| ⭐ The key point | ⭐⭐ 「像铃鼓,但不是铃鼓」 — horizontal(tambourine vertical)· tunable head · the skin is the voice · removable head · drier jingles → ⭐⭐ 「两者中更万能的」 |
| ⭐⭐ Strokes | ⭐⭐ thumb · fingertips · heel · palm in rotation — one skin makes a whole groove; shake and the rasp; ⭐ the thumb roll shared with the tambourine |
| ⭐⭐ Two faces | ⭐⭐ medieval square Adufe(13th c. · Iberia · Moorish roots)vs Brazilian round single-head(six pairs of jingles · skin or nylon)— ⭐⭐ prototype and descendant, one name |
| ⭐ Route | Middle-Eastern frame drums → North Africa → Iberia → Portuguese colonists → Brazil; from the pandeireta / pandereta |
| ⭐⭐ Standing | ⭐⭐ Brazil's 「unofficial national instrument」 — samba · choro · baião · frevo · capoeira; 「现代潘德罗之父」Marcos Suzano took it into funk/rock/electronic |
| ⭐ Skin choice | natural = hand-made · bass tones · light · choro|plastic = factory · stable · heavy · samba & pagode; ⭐ 「
| ⭐⭐ Improper seats | Moore tuned it low into a drum kit; Wilson paired it with a bodhran, brushes, as a kit |
| HS | Membranophone(single-head frame drum)+ idiophone component(jingle ring) — two classes at once, like the tambourine |
⭐⭐ Step through and you find: the tambourine's sound lives in its jingles, the pandeiro's in its skin —
one is a bell with a drum attached; the other is a drum with a bell attached.
