The human voice

A whole band inside the body — singing came before language

⭐⭐ The main line: a whole band inside the body

「the lungs, the 『pump』, must produce adequate airflow and air pressure to vibrate the vocal folds; the vocal folds vibrate, modulating airflow from the lungs for sound production; the articulators (tongue, palate, cheek, lips) articulate and filter the sound emanating from the larynx」.

⭐⭐ A complete human synthesizer:

Body partSynth role
Lungsair pump / bellows (supply)
Vocal foldsoscillator — 「similar in function to a clarinet reed」
Vocal tract (pharynx/mouth/nose)filter — formants shaping vowels
Chest & head cavitiesamplifier — resonance

⭐⭐ All three elements of subtractive synthesis ran in bodies for millennia — against the moog-modular entry: subtractive synthesis was only named in 1948 — the naming of a principle came tens of thousands of years after the principle.

HS classAssignment
HS classthe body (aerophone · reed vibration + filtering) — belongs to no instrument family, listed alone; the most irregular member of the HS system: its body is the instrument
Origin⭐⭐ possibly older than language (the mid-Paleolithic music-first hypothesis) — the only instrument on this site that predates writing and speech
Bayin noteOutside the bayin — the voice belongs to none of metal/stone/clay/hide/silk/wood/gourd/bamboo, yet contains them all (the clapper of jingyun drumming · the throat of Mongolian khöömei · the towers of Kam grand song) — it is the one instrument above the bayin's sum

⭐⭐ Singing came before language

⭐⭐ 「scholars have hypothesized that singing predates spoken language, appearing during the middle Paleolithic era or earlier」 — the voice is the only instrument on this site that may be older than language.

⭐⭐ Against the site's timeline: the Telharmonium wanted to transmit music over wires (1906) · the Rhythmicon wanted to compute rhythms no hands could play (1931) — the voice did both millennia ago: transmitting (song passed mouth to mouth) and computing (polyrhythmic folk song). Every technological 「invention」 is a revision of something the voice once did.

⭐⭐ The physics of the folds: pitch is size, timbre is culture

⭐⭐ The data: 「adult male vocal folds 17–25mm; female 12.5–17.5mm」; 「three-layer construction: epithelium · vocal ligament · vocalis muscle — they can shorten and bulge」; 「men generally have a larger vocal tract, giving a lower-sounding timbre — mostly independent of the folds」.

⭐⭐ Speech as melody: 「speech itself……could be considered a primitive form of melody」 — language is a fossil of melody; the undulation of everyday speech is disciplined melody (against the folk-song library: folk song is speech not yet fully disciplined).

⭐⭐ Timbre is culture: 「a tight, nasal tone is associated with many Asian and Arabic traditions, whereas opera and gospel singers employ a chest voice with pronounced vibrato」 — ⭐⭐ one instrument, different aesthetic conventions — whether a timbre is 「good」 is written by culture, not physics.

⭐⭐ SATB: arranging voices on the pitch spectrum

⭐⭐ 「a trained singer has about a two-octave range — most Western songs fit within two octaves」: half of Western song range was not set by composers — it was set by the voice. ⭐ Castrati: adult male altos and soprani were formally integrated into the choir of St Peter's — when an institution wants a sound, it finds an institutional way.

⭐⭐ Diva Dance: human limits and the technical patch

⭐⭐ The Fifth Element's (1997) Diva Dance was 「supposedly composed beyond the range and ability of humans to sing」 — 「Eric Serra hired opera singer Maria Callas to sing each note separately, and audio engineers assembled those individual notes in an editing program」; while 「Jane Zhang later sang the unsingable live on stage」.

⭐⭐ A prehistory of pitch correction in 1997: first assembled (Callas), then live (Jane Zhang) — against the auto-tune entry's Cher 「Believe」 (1998): the fight between technology and human limits opened in cinema a year before pop.

⭐ The only instrument that carries meaning

⭐⭐ 「Most music for the voice involves the delivery of words」; 「Vocal music is often identified as sacred or secular on the basis of its text」 — every instrument on this site is 「silent」; only the voice brings words, and sacred/secular is divided by text: an instrument's 「meaning」 was adjudicated by words for the first time. (Against all instrument entries classified by form — the voice is classified by text: its last irregularity.)

The voice 「range」 (all voice types combined · a trained singer spans about two octaves)

The voice is a bodily aerophone (reed vibration + filtering) — the lungs as air pump, the vocal folds as oscillator (male 17–25mm / female 12.5–17.5mm), the vocal tract as filter and amplifier. The range spans all voice types combined: male bass E2–E5+, tenor roughly C3–C5; female contralto F3–C6+, soprano roughly C4–C6; a countertenor can reach the alto range. A single trained singer spans about two octaves — half of Western song range is decided by the voice itself. The superhuman Diva Dance (The Fifth Element, 1997) was assembled by engineers from Callas singing each note separately.
