The archaeology and revival of the xun

The history of its finger holes is a fossil record of Chinese music — an instrument that blew itself for seven millennia

⭐⭐ The main line: the hole count is the timeline

The xun alone possesses a historical archive no other instrument has: its finger-hole count is a fossil record of Chinese music history.

⭐⭐ Three thousand years from one hole to five — and one night from five to eight (Chen Zhong's laboratory, 1979) — ⭐⭐ the first half is evolution, the second half is revival: an instrument took seven millennia to grow into modernity, then twenty years to return from the grave to the stage. (The instance "Hunting Song" recalls its prehistoric CV: the stone meteor — a hollow stone on a cord, singing as it swung — hunting tool → decoy tool → instrument: one object's former life was weapon and trap; only later did it enter court music.)

⭐⭐ Pitch archaeology: the clay still remembers pitch

Banpo's one-hole pottery whistle measures a minor third (yu and gong) — and it is "the oldest known form of a musical scale".

⭐ The Jingcun and Yijing two-hole xun sound three notes, "the oldest known trichord"; the Huoshaogou three-hole painted xun (fish-shaped, from over twenty commoners' graves) sounds the four pillars gong-jue-zhi-yu. ⭐⭐ Scales were not recorded in documents; they were recorded in clay — each specimen's absolute pitch differs, but the interval relationships stay stable: the ancients had no absolute pitch; what they held was relative relations (intervals). (Compare bianzhong-tuning's one bell two pitches — two routes to reading music history from objects: the xun reads intervals, the bells read temperament.)

⭐⭐ The sound of autumn's beginning: a timbre bound to a season

「The xun is the sound of the beginning of autumn.」 — Yue Shu

⭐ The xun's timbre is "deep, mournful, plaintive, unending"; the ancients endowed it with "sacred, elegant, mysterious, noble" qualities, later ages praised it as "the sound of virtue". ⭐⭐ A clay instrument's timbre was bound by one document to one season — "the sound of the beginning of autumn" is the earliest and most successful timbre marketing in Chinese music history (the instance "A Courtesan's Autumn Grief": the grief Chinese listeners hear is half the colour of clay). ⭐ And the Shijing's "the elder brother blows the xun, the younger blows the chi" — two brothers expressing fraternal harmony — the xun was never a solo animal; its first documented job was witnessing brotherly love (crossing the chi entry).

⭐⭐ Form and two counter-intuitive facts

⭐ Form evolution: round/oval → flat-bottomed egg shape (easy to set down); cavity flat-bellied → round-bellied ("greater air capacity, thicker and fuller sound" — the shape was chosen by the sound); materials stone → bone → clay → (modern) wood and resin.

⭐ Two sizes inside the court: the ya xun (large · deep and low) and the song xun (small as an egg · slightly higher) — compare bianzhong's ya/song division, "sizing instruments by use" was the systematic design of Zhou ritual music.

⭐⭐ Two counter-intuitive facts: ① The xun has no whistle — "the player must adjust the blowing angle to excite the airflow, and may rotate the body to fine-tune the pitch" (HS 421.221.42 vessel flute) — ⭐⭐ the mechanism of "one hole, three sounds": the same hole yields three pitches through angle — the xun is the only instrument that builds its technique into the mouth-hole rather than the finger holes (compare the yodel-overtone entry's one throat, two voices — one divides the throat in time, the other divides the pitch at the blow hole); ② It was interrupted — by the Qing the lineage had lapsed, until Wu Xunyuan of Zhili happened on a xun and copied the late-Shang five-hole pear-shaped pottery xun "to reveal the secrets of ancient pitch".

⭐⭐ The revival: from Wu Xunyuan to Chen Zhong

In the 1970s–80s, Lü Ji, Huang Xiangpeng, Cao Zheng, Chen Zhong and other elder musicians did two things: pitch-measured excavated xun across the dynasties to reconstruct ancient Chinese scales, and copied ancient specimens to master xun-making craft.

⭐⭐ In 1979 Chen Zhong produced the first playable revived xun, raising the hole count to eight — an instrument silent for three centuries sounded again. ⭐ In the 1980s xun music first reached the international stage. ⭐ What returned it to daily life was craft standardisation: professional resin-sand-clay composite xun-making (mature in the late 80s/early 90s, pioneered by Zhang Ronghua) — shock-resistant, durable, producible in matched sets — ⭐⭐ from archaeological specimen to purchasable instrument, what lay between was a materials revolution (compare the 808's out-of-spec transistors — the xun's revival did not rely on replicating ancient methods but on modern materials; "tradition" was rescued by modern craft).

⭐ The last stroke came from literature: Jia Pingwa's Feidu appeared, and xun art "rose again on the wings of fiction"; in 1997 Zhang Weiliang released the first xun album, Asking Heaven — ⭐⭐ a seven-thousand-year-old instrument's comeback relied, at the end, on a novel and a record — from hunting tool to sound of autumn's beginning to bestseller interlude, it blew itself into a general cultural history.

Xun 「range」 (five holes giving seven notes; modern eight to eleven widen it)

The xun's range history is its hole-count history: the Banpo one-hole specimen sounded a minor third (yu-gong) → the Jingcun/Yijing two-hole specimens three notes → the Huoshaogou three-hole four notes → the late-Shang five-hole 「able to play the complete seven-note scale」 → Han six to seven holes → Chen Zhong's 1979 revival raised it to eight → modern eight to eleven holes 「greatly widen its range and expressiveness」. This entry takes the combined span C1–C6 (common playing area C2–C5): the ya xun (large, deep and low) and song xun (small as an egg, slightly higher) occupy the two ends of the register. ⚠️ The key point of pitch archaeology is that 「absolute pitches differ from specimen to specimen, but interval relationships stay stable」 — the ancients had no absolute pitch, only relative relations; pitch archaeology reads intervals, not pitches. Mechanically the xun has no whistle (HS 421.221.42 vessel flute) — 「the player must adjust the blowing angle to excite the airflow, and may rotate the body to fine-tune the pitch」 — one hole can yield different pitches through angle and rotation.
