The atumpan

The king's tongue — a pair of drums speaking for the whole court

⭐⭐ The main line: the king's tongue

「Kyerema means tongue. The person is the voice. Whereas the linguist is the thought and tongue of the king, the divine drummer is also the voice of the palace to the community.」

The Asante court had two mouths: one for thinking (the linguist, okyeame, the king's thought and tongue) and one for speaking — the latter being the divine drummer, the Odomankoma-Kyerema, and Kyerema means 「tongue」.

⭐⭐ In every Asanteman community, whatever the king tells the chiefs through the linguist is also made known to the divine drummer —— ⭐⭐ the drummer is the palace's mouth to the community. What he strikes is not music but the pitch-shaped version of a royal order.

⭐⭐ Against the site's 「the voice is the only semantics-bearing instrument」: the human voice carries meaning by nature, while a drum must be taught a language before it can carry any. ⭐⭐ The atumpan is the only drum on the site that had to learn to speak before it became an instrument.

⭐⭐ One sound, two things: a drum and a script

⭐⭐ The Asante also have Adinkra, a system of symbolic writing: sankofa「return and fetch it」· gye nyame「except for God」· dwennimmen「ram's horns」· nkyimim「the crossed divisions」…… hundreds of stamps, each carrying a proverb. ⭐⭐ Adinkra and atumpan sound alike and are entirely different things: one is a drum, one is a script.

⭐⭐ And the drum is often decorated with Adinkra symbols: 「its wooden body is often adorned with Adinkra symbols, such as sankofa, which emphasize the importance of learning from the past」 —— ⭐⭐ an instrument carved with the symbols of a homophonous system: script and instrument share one sound in the same culture (a new pole in the site's naming lineage: one sound, two things, and one thing carved with the other).

⭐⭐ And the name itself was borrowed: 「Atumpan in Akan is a word believed to have been borrowed from northern Ghana」 —— ⭐⭐ an instrument that arrived in the south carrying a loanword (against bili, a transcription of Kucha speech · balafon, a mis-spelling of the Manding by Europeans · atumpan, borrowed by the Asante from the north —— the commonest thing in instrument history: object and word travel by different routes).

⭐⭐ One pair of drums, three working modes

⭐⭐ Nketia (professor of music at the University of Ghana, 1963) divided Asante drumming into three modes:

ModeFunction
Signal modeSignals: announcing, summoning, announcing death, marking ceremony
Speech modeSpeech: striking out the tonal contour of a sentence
Dance modeDance: the rhythmic layer that goes with the dance

⭐⭐ The same instrument has three states of work, and there is a ritual for moving between them (against the site's 「one instrument, several jobs」 lineage: an a cappella choir does three jobs · the talking drum two —— the atumpan does three).

⭐ Form: a pair of tall hourglass drums (larger than the Yoruba dùndún), each hollowed from a single log into a narrow waist and laced through with tension cords; a low male drum and a high female drum, played as a pair; the player stands behind them with the drums tilted away, striking with a hooked stick made from a branch joint (shaped like the digit 7). About 80 cm tall; heads traditionally antelope, now antelope or cow. HS single-headed struck membranophone (Metropolitan Museum, 19th century, 56 × 24.8 cm, Crosby Brown Collection 1889).

⭐⭐ What it says: a chief's arrival · a summons · praise poems and history · funerals and enstoolment. At durbars and festivals such as Akwasidae, the drumming is itself part of the ceremony's programme.

⭐⭐ Deaths get their own drum set: before the death of a chief, king or queen mother is announced, drums of the Kete · Adowa · Fontomfrom combine to warn the community —— hear that set and you know something is coming.

⭐⭐ The opening: greet the materials first

⭐⭐ Performances often begin with a formal 「awakening of the drum」: the drummer first addresses the spirit of the wood and the materials the drum was made from, asking their blessing, and only then speaks.

⭐⭐ The site's most complete instance of an instrument addressing its own materials —— ⭐⭐ three West African drums, three ways of speaking to the invisible: the mbira calls ancestors with a bottle cap · the talking drum transmits messages in drum speech · the atumpan greets first and then speaks.

⭐ 「The drummer is hereditary」: 「if a grandfather was a divine drummer, the role would naturally pass to his sons and grandsons, preserving both the craft and its meaning」 —— ⭐⭐ craft and meaning travel together (against the kora's jali inheritance, which carries a *version*; the atumpan carries *an office*) —— ⭐⭐ two kinds of inheritance: passing on 「how to play it」 vs passing on 「who is allowed to play it」.

⭐⭐ A drum family, and a whole set with the flute

NameRole
AtumpanThe talking drums · male/female pair
DonnoHourglass · the Dagomba 「talking drum of Africa」 from the north
FontomfromThe largest and heaviest drum · the core of the drum orchestra
Apentema / Petia / Brenko / TorowaSmall support drum · high support drum · bottle-shaped support drum · gourd rattle
DawuroSlit bell drum
AtentebenBamboo flute played with the drums

⭐⭐ Drums and flute form one set: ⭐⭐ the drum speaks, the flute accompanies (against the three dununs · the kora's one-man doubling).

⭐⭐ 「Script on the drum body, script on the drum cloth」: Adinkra cloth — traditionally block-printed on undyed red, dark brown or black hand-woven cotton — was worn by royalty and spiritual leaders for funerals and other very special occasions, and broadened from there; ⭐⭐ the same set of symbols appears on cloth, on drums, and on gold weights.

⭐ History: the Asante Empire 1701–1901, annexed by Britain in 1901; by tradition 15th–16th century and inherited ever since; colonial officials recorded the drum's use at ceremonies, inadvertently preserving its archive; after independence in 1957 Ghana's cultural revival folded it into national celebration and education; ethnomusicologists such as Nketia studied Asante drumming systematically; today it is taught at the University of Ghana's School of Performing Arts and appears in television signature tunes and national events.

⭐⭐ Against the two fates in the talking drum entry: the talking drum was interrupted by colonial bans and later blossomed; ⭐⭐ the atumpan took the other road — because it was a court instrument, the colonial administration needed it to communicate and govern —— ⭐⭐ the same technology: the banned branch grew underground into a genre, the permitted branch became the sound of the state.

Atumpan 「range」 (the span shared by the low male drum and the high female drum)

The atumpan is played in pairs, one low male drum and one high female drum whose registers meet, and together they cover a wide span: the male drum carries the low end and the falling contour of a phrase, the female drum the high end and its rise. ⭐⭐ Here pitch is not high or low but meaning: Twi is a tonal language in which the same syllable changes sense with the tone, so what the drummer actually steers is the whole sentence's tonal contour rather than a string of passing notes. ⭐⭐ Two adjustments happen at once: standing behind the drum the player strikes with a hooked stick while squeezing the tension cords running through the body with the other arm — ⭐⭐ the same cord-tuning as the talking drum, but with an L-shaped stick made from a branch joint (shaped like the digit 7) that both strikes and braces, giving a usable span of roughly C2–C6 (C3–C5 in practice) — wide enough to carry a full sentence's rise and fall. ⭐⭐ What separates it from the talking drum is the language: with the same tension-cord technology, the Yoruba drum speaks Yoruba and the Asante drum speaks Twi — ⭐⭐ the technique travels, the dictionary does not.
