Choir scoring
Scoring is another kind of architectural acoustics — the first stereo was two choirs in facing lofts

⭐⭐ The main line: scoring is another kind of architectural acoustics
「this placement of performers and the specific writing of the parts created the first type of stereo sound and three-dimensional listening experiences」.
⭐⭐ Humanity's first stereo was two choirs standing in facing lofts — cori spezzati (split choirs) developed at St. Mark's Basilica in the sixteenth century: 「composers would contrast different instrumentalists and groups of singers utilizing the effects of space in the performance venue, that is, the church」. ⭐⭐ Space is an instrument; the building is the score.
| HS class | Assignment |
|---|---|
| HS class | the collectivisation of the body (aerophone · reed vibration + filtering) — a choir is not 「many people singing」 but the technique of organising people into one instrument |
| Origin | ⭐⭐ sixteenth-century St. Mark's Basilica, Venice (the best musicians employed from the 1420s · Willaert bringing Netherlandish polyphony · Gabrieli perfecting cori spezzati) |
| Bayin note | Outside the bayin — China's call-and-response is its folk cousin: one group calls, one answers, and the space between them is the instrument |
⭐⭐ The democratisation of parts: the polyphonic revolution
⭐⭐ The essence of Netherlandish polyphony: 「treat each voice part as being of equal importance, rather than……one voice singing a slow cantus firmus, with other parts providing fluent, yet unimportant, contrapuntal accompaniments」 — ⭐⭐ from 「one voice holding a long note while the others accompany」 to 「every voice is a subject」 — the equality of parts arrived on paper three centuries before the equality of people.
⭐⭐ Sonata pian'e forte (1597)
「pioneering in musical scoring in that Gabrieli wrote specific louds and softs into the individual parts」.
⭐⭐ The p/f signs plus the pianoforte (crystallised by Cristofori around 1700) — the same semantic field growing at once on the part and the keyboard: expression became a writable parameter for the first time. (Against the vocal-production entry: dynamics were always a variable of singing; after 1597 they became an instruction in the score.)
⭐⭐ In ecclesiis (1615): a four-layer texture
⭐⭐ 「Gabrieli has three 『choirs』 at play: the soloists, the chorus, and the instruments, all supported by the organ」 plus continuo — ⭐⭐ soloists · chorus · instruments · organ: a four-layer scoring, the Baroque basilica's 「multitrack recording」; the continuo is the harmonic foundation, the soloist decorates upon it.
⭐⭐ The scoring family
| Scoring | Form |
|---|---|
| SATB | four-part mixed choir (the base) |
| Equal voices | SSA (female) · TTBB (male) |
| SSAATTBB | eight parts (two four-part groups merged) |
| Double choir | SATB-SATB (Lassus and Gabrieli both wrote it) |
| Chamber choir | about 20–40 singers |
| Symphonic chorus | 100–200 singers |
| Opera chorus | the 「mass voice」 on stage |
⭐⭐ Scoring is timbre design — headcount and part-count decide the harmonic density. (Against the voice-types entry: SATB is a taxonomy; the choir is the machine that turns the taxonomy into sound.)
⭐ The Chinese line and MIDI's loft
⭐⭐ The choralisation of call-and-response (the modern redemption of 「the lead is the proto-first voice」); Xian Xinghai's Yellow River Cantata (1939), text by Guang Weiran, made the chorus an institutional genre of modern China. ⭐⭐ Kam grand song (no conductor · a cappella · polyphonic) — polyphony without scoring: scoring is a Western invention, polyphony is humanity's shared property.
⭐⭐ MIDI's loft: the double choir's left-right placement → the twentieth century's pan knob and multitrack recorder → the DAW's automated panning — ⭐⭐ from St. Mark's lofts to Ableton's panning: cori spezzati's digital descendants turned 「space」 into a draggable parameter.
Choir scoring is the collectivisation of the bodily aerophone: the four-part mixed choir SATB is the base (soprano C4–C6 · alto F3–B5 · tenor C3–C5 · bass C2–E4), the combined span roughly C2–C7; equal-voice choirs (SSA/TTBB) narrow to one sex's compass, while eight-part (SSAATTBB) and double-choir (SATB-SATB) writing add no range but add contrapuntal density and the width of the sound field — the split lofts of cori spezzati made space itself an instrument (the first stereo). Scoring is timbre design: headcount and part-count decide the harmonic density.

- ⭐⭐ 主线:编制是另一种建筑声学(本页最该记住的一条) —— cori spezzati(分隔合唱):「developed in the sixteenth century at St. Mark's where composers would contrast different instrumentalists and groups of singers utilizing the effects of space in the performance venue, that is, the church」;「One sub-ensemble would play the 『call』 and another would give the 『response』 — antiphonal performance」;⭐⭐ 「this placement of performers and the specific writing of the parts created the first type of stereo sound and three-dimensional listening experiences」——⭐⭐ 人类第一套立体声,是两群人站在楼廊里:空间是乐器,建筑是总谱
- ⭐⭐ 圣马可的职位链与声部民主化 —— 「Since the 1420s the best musicians of the day had been employed at this, the city's principal church」;Adrian Willaert(约 1480–1562)「had brought to Venice the Netherlandish polyphonic style」;⭐⭐ 复调革命的本质是声部民主化:「pieces written in this style treat each voice part as being of equal importance, rather than the more traditional approach of having one voice singing a slow cantus firmus, with other parts providing fluent, yet unimportant, contrapuntal accompaniments」——⭐⭐ 从「一个声部唱长音、其他声部陪衬」到「每个声部都是主体」——声部的平等比人的平等早了三百年在乐谱上实现;职位链:Willaert → Andrea Gabrieli(叔)→ Giovanni Gabrieli(1554/7–1612,1586 继任圣马可管风琴师)→ 学生 Heinrich Schütz(把威尼斯乐派带回德国)
- ⭐⭐ Sonata pian'e forte(1597):把强弱写进分谱 —— 「pioneering in musical scoring in that Gabrieli wrote specific louds and softs (volume) into the individual parts for the performers to observe」;「The introduction of writing dynamics into music by composers is a major step toward notating expression into the music score」;⭐⭐ p/f 记号 + pianoforte 乐器(约 1700 Cristofori 定型)——同一个语义场在分谱与键盘上同时生长:表达第一次成为可书写的参数(对照 vocal-production 条:力度从来是唱法的变量,1597 年后它成了乐谱的指令)
- {'⭐⭐ In ecclesiis(1615)的四层织体 —— 「in effect, Gabrieli has three 『choirs』 at play in In ecclesiis, the soloists, the chorus, and the instruments, all supported by the organ」;「Giovanni added a new element': 'continuo. The organ plays throughout, allowing the composer to use more expressive solo ornamentation」;⭐⭐ 独唱 · 合唱 · 器乐 · 管风琴——四层编制是巴洛克教堂的「多轨录音」:通奏低音是和声地基,独唱在地基上装饰(对照 a-cappella 条的未来对照:有低音与无低音是两条传统)'}
