The oud
Its name means wood — a fretless lute that can sing in between the notes
Related
⭐⭐ The main line: its name means wood
「Its name, from Arabic ʿūd (wood), refers to its aloe wood belly, in contrast to the skin bellies of earlier lutes.」
The oud's name simply means 「wood」——because its belly is wooden, while those of its predecessors were skinned.
⭐⭐ The site's seventh naming pole: the material (the proverb name djembe · the transliteration bili · the mistaken name a cappella · the ancestor name mbira · the debased original kora/jali · the Western misnomer djun djun · the action name balafon · the material name oud). ⭐⭐ An instrument named after a piece of wood in its own body —— and that piece of wood is exactly where it parts company with its forebears: the name records a technical substitution (against the site's 「changing bodies」 lineage: the TB-303's circuitry · the 808's transistors · the electric violin's vanishing body · the oud's swap from skin belly to wood belly).
⭐⭐ And it is the ancestor of European classical strings: 「the Arabic al-ʿūd entered French as le luth, and thence English as lute」 —— ⭐⭐ oud → lute → vihuela → guitar: ⭐⭐ the largest single instrument export on the site: a Middle Eastern instrument became the ancestor of the whole Western string family (against the site's 「instruments that changed the world」: the yodel coined the word nostalgia · the banjo went round the earth and came home · the oud exported as the ancestor of Western classical strings).
⭐⭐ Fretless is not an omission but a capability
⭐⭐ Being fretless is the 「fundamental difference」 from the Western lute —— ⭐⭐ the whole instrument is designed for microtonality: 「in Arabic and Turkish music, both of which use micro-tonal intervals (maqam and makam) that lie between the notes of the Western chromatic scale」.
⭐⭐ A fingertip on a smooth fingerboard can land anywhere between two semitones —— ⭐⭐ the site's extreme case of 「intonation is a position, not a scale」 (against the Moog's voltage control: pitch as a continuous quantity · auto-tune: pitch quantised to a grid · the oud: pitch given continuously by the physical position of a finger).
⭐⭐ And whether the oud had frets is an open question: medieval theorists discussed frets on the oud in relation to the intervals of the maqāmāt, yet 「Surviving pictures of the oud show no frets」 —— ⭐⭐ the object has no frets while the theory discusses its frets —— the site's classic case of theory running ahead of the artefact.
⭐⭐ The oldest time anyone measured an instrument in fingers
⭐⭐ In the 9th century the philosopher al-Kindi gave the first complete description of the oud's construction in the *Risāla fī-l-Luḥūn wa-n-Nagham*: total length thirty-six joint fingers (three ashbār) · width fifteen fingers · depth seven and a half fingers · six fingers behind the bridge · thirty fingers of string · ten fingers of neck · twenty fingers of vibrating body.
⭐⭐ Every number is a finger —— because the maker's hand was the ruler. ⭐⭐ The oldest piece of anthropometry on the site: an instrument's dimensions written in fingers, a thousand years before anyone wrote them in metres.
⭐⭐ The body is a circle cut in half: 「as if it had been a round body drawn with a compass which was cut in two in order to extract two ʿūds」 —— ⭐⭐ 「draw a circle with a compass, then split it in two」 —— the common geometric origin of every bowl-shaped resonator (against the balafon's gourds · the marimba's tuned tubes · the oud's bowl of many wooden staves).
⭐⭐ Three acts of migration, and one crucial act
| Act | Period | Content |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Before Islam | pre-Islamic | Persian, Arabian and Mesopotamian strings: three strings, a small box, no pegbox |
| 2 · Golden Age | 700–1200 | As al-ʿūd it becomes the core instrument of Islamic civilisation; al-Kindi and al-Farabi write theory with it |
| 3 · Export | 900–1400 | Reaches Europe through al-Andalus and the Crusades; by the 13th century the European lute has formed |
⭐⭐ 「Adding a pegbox」 was a structural liberation —— pre-Islamic lutes had no pegbox (buntuk); the Islamic era added it (against the site's 「one small part changes a whole family」: the 808's out-of-spec transistors · the balafon's gourd membrane · the oud's pegbox).
⭐⭐ 「Adding frets」 was the crucial act of that export: ⭐⭐ the East kept the fretless board, the West developed frets —— one lute split in two (⭐⭐ the site's 「one source, two fates」 specimens: two New Orleans · two New Orleans jazes · one instrument divided east and west).
⭐⭐ Ziryab (9th century) carried the oud into al-Andalus and reshaped both its body and its tuning —— ⭐⭐ a singer altered an instrument, and the instrument then rewrote Western music.
⭐⭐ A set of strings named by pitch: the four pre-Islamic strings were bamm · maṭlaṭ · maṭnā · zīr (low to high), and a fifth string, ḥād (「sharp」), was added in the 9th century to complete two octaves —— ⭐⭐ among the site's earliest instrument 「staves」 (against the bells reading a lü · the ocarina reading intervals · the oud's string names are its note names).
⭐⭐ Form at a glance
⭐ Body: deep pear shape · a bowl back assembled edge to edge from many thin staves of hardwood (walnut, mahogany, rosewood, maple) · a soundboard usually of spruce or cedar, pierced with a central round hole and carved wooden roses · short fretless neck · a pegbox bent sharply back (the pegs sit in its sides, raising string tension at the nut, and it is the instrument's visual signature) · 11 strings (five paired courses plus a single bass) · HS 321.321-6 (the same class as the sitar and the European lute —— ⭐⭐ the identical HS number is itself a piece of historical evidence).
⭐⭐ Two schools: the Arabic oud (heavier, deeper, louder) and the Turkish oud (lighter, brighter, tuned a tone higher).
⭐ The pick is called a risha: traditionally cut from an eagle feather, today plastic or horn.
⭐ The oldest one: the oldest surviving oud is thought to be in Brussels, at the Museum of Musical Instruments.
⭐ Players: Farid al-Atrash · Munir Bashir · Riad al-Sunbati · Anouar Brahem · Naseer Shamma · Marcel Khalife · Dhafer Youssef; listed by UNESCO in 2022 (Iran and Syria, reference 01867).

The oud's compass is not a row of cells cut by frets but a continuous field of available pitch: the left hand's position can vary within any small interval, so the usable pitches are denser than on any fretted instrument. The usual span is roughly C2–C6 (most repertoire sits in C3–C5), built from five paired courses plus a single bass string —— the five pairs lie in consecutive fourths, preserving the ancient succession of bamm · maṭlaṭ · maṭnā · zīr, with the single string added below to widen the range beyond the four-course arrangement. ⭐⭐ And with no frets, a note's intonation is not fixed by the position of a metal strip but by the exact place the left fingertip takes on the smooth fingerboard: on one string, two finger positions less than a semitone apart are both correct —— ⭐⭐ that is the physical basis of the maqam system, where microtonal intervals (quarter tones, commas) are not decorative slides but the very pitches on which a different modal system depends. ⭐⭐ Against a fretted instrument the oud reaches more distinct pitches in the same length and can deviate further from twelve-tone equal temperament —— at the price that every note must be located by the ear in the moment, with no 「this fret」 to point at. ⭐⭐ The Arabic and Turkish schools tune a whole tone apart, so the same maqam sits at a different absolute pitch on each.
