The qanun

Its name means rule — a ruler for measuring intervals

⭐⭐ The main line: its name means rule

「The name derives ultimately from Ancient Greek κανών (kanōn) 'rule, law, norm, principle'.」

The qanun's root is the Greek κανών (kanōn) — rule, law, norm. ⭐⭐ The site's eighth naming pole: the abstract concept —— an instrument named after the word 「rule」 itself.

⭐⭐ And it really was used as a ruler: 「the Arabic word qānūn originally meant 'rule' or 'law' —— suggesting the instrument was conceived as a kind of acoustic ruler for measuring and demonstrating musical intervals」; ⭐⭐ 「the kanun was designed as a theoretical instrument first, a performance instrument second」.

⭐⭐ The only instrument on the site conceived as a theoretical object first and a performing instrument second (against the auto-tune, where the algorithm came first · the mbira, where the pitch came first · the qanun, where the ruler came before the music).

⭐⭐ Two birth certificates: one writes dimensions, one writes intervals

⭐⭐ The earliest description comes from a theorist: al-Farabi (872–950) describes a qānūn in the *Kitab al-Musiqa al-Kabir* —— ⭐⭐ the instrument appears in a philosopher's book: its origin lies in interval theory, not in repertoire.

⭐⭐ Against the oud entry: al-Kindi recorded the oud's dimensions (thirty-six fingers) —— ⭐⭐ the two Middle Eastern instruments' birth certificates, one a measurement of size, one a measurement of interval.

⭐⭐ And its prehistory is older than Greece: 「traces one of its origins to a stringed Assyrian instrument from the Old Assyrian Empire, specifically from the nineteenth century BC in Mesopotamia —— inscribed on a box of elephant ivory found in the old Assyrian capital Nimrud」 —— ⭐⭐ a nineteenth-century-BC instrument whose evidence is an engraving on an ivory box (against the ocarina's archaeology, where hole count is the timeline · the qanun's archaeology: one line scratched on ivory).

⭐⭐ The mandal: a brass tab that moves one note

⭐⭐ Beneath every course sits a small brass lever, and pressing it lightly against the string shortens the effective vibrating length, raising that note by about a quarter tone. ⭐⭐ 「Hundreds of mandal configurations are at the player's disposal on an ordinary Turkish kanun」 —— ⭐⭐ the site's most refined single-note fine tuner: it does not alter timbre but the pitch itself, in real time during performance (against the auto-tune's correction · the oud's fingertip locating —— ⭐⭐ the qanun uses a mechanical lever to do what the oud does with a finger).

⭐⭐ The mandal predates the standard: the Turkish musicologist Rauf Yekta found the technique in use on ordinary diatonic kanuns some 30 years before his Turkish music monograph appeared in the 1922 *Encyclopédie de la Musique* —— ⭐⭐ a technique for adding pitch correction preceded the idea that pitch correction needed standardising.

⭐⭐ The 20th-century standard: the Turkish conservatories, under Arel and Ezgi, produced the AEU (Arel–Ezgi–Uzdilek) system, which fixes both tuning and mandal configuration to serve the AEU makam theory —— ⭐⭐ a theory and an instrument configuration bound together: the instrument as the materialisation of a theory (against the bells reading a lü —— ⭐⭐ the qanun is the first time a tuning system grew into something playable).

⭐ 79-tone tuning: Ozan Yarman proposed it in 2007 and applied it to a Turkish qanun —— ⭐⭐ from 24-tone equal temperament to 79 tones: an instrument rewrites its own hardware for a tuning system (⭐⭐ the extreme of 「the instrument follows the theory」).

⭐⭐ One hand doing two things

⭐ Form: a thin trapezoidal soundboard · one long bridge resting on a row of arching pillars, the pillars padded with fish skin (⭐ the Arabic form uses five supports against the Turkish four —— one more pad leaves room for extreme bass and treble strings) · nylon or PVC strings stretched over the bridge on the fish-skin side and tied to wooden tuning pegs at the other · the Turkish form has 26 courses of three strings · compass A2–E6 (the Arabic form reaching F2–G6) · Turkish size 95–100 cm long, 38–40 cm wide, 4–6 cm thick, 4–6 kg · walnut or mahogany.

⭐⭐ The decorated sound holes, kafes —— 「a critical component of what constitutes the accustomed timbre of qanun」 —— ⭐⭐ the holes are not merely ornament; they are part of this zither's resonating structure.

⭐⭐ The picks are called zihaf: two small tortoiseshell or plastic picks ringed onto the index fingers, ⭐⭐ while the remaining fingers and thumbs are left to work the mandal levers —— ⭐⭐ one hand doing two things at once: plucking and altering pitch. The most 「分工到指尖」 technique on the site.

⭐⭐ It travelled with the people: the qanun reached West Africa and Central Asia with Arab migration (⭐⭐ a second route of instrument migration: the qanun travelled with traders; against the banjo's slave-trade route · the oud's route of scholars and craftsmen).

⭐⭐ The Ottoman contribution: Istanbul's fusion of Arabic, Turkish, Byzantine, Persian and Roma influence produced the form that persists today; ⭐⭐ the qanun sat at the melodic centre of the fasıl, the Ottoman classical chamber ensemble —— ⭐⭐ the fasıl is Turkey's string quartet.

Qanun 「range」 (three and a half octaves across twenty-six courses)

The qanun's compass is the widest practical span in the zither family: the Turkish instrument usually carries twenty-six courses of three strings each, running from A2 to E6 — three and a half octaves — while the Arabic form, with one more fish-skin support under the bridge (five against four), can carry more extreme bass and treble strings and so reach down to F2 and up to G6. The working register is C3–C6. ⭐⭐ The relationship between that compass and the maqam system is not 「is it enough」 but 「can it be subdivided」: ⭐⭐ beneath every course sits a small brass lever, the mandal, which when pressed lightly against the string shortens its effective vibrating length and raises that note by about a quarter tone —— ⭐⭐ so each pitch position has several available microtonal detents, and an ordinary Turkish qanun offers the player hundreds of mandal combinations. ⭐⭐ The 20th-century Turkish conservatory standard (AEU — Arel, Ezgi and Uzdilek) fixes tuning and mandal configuration together, making this instrument the materialisation of a tuning theory. ⭐⭐ Against the oud, both serve the same maqam system but take opposite routes to microtones: the oud by the actual position of a finger on a fretless board (a hand), the qanun by a mechanical lever changing string length (a lever) —— ⭐⭐ one problem, two technical answers.
