Yodeling and overtone singing

Turning the register break into the product — two voices living in one throat

⭐⭐ The main line: turning the register break into the product

The voice-types entry noted that the passaggio is one of the six dimensions of Fach — two voices can share a top note yet produce entirely different fatigue, which is exactly where classification earns its keep; bel canto "solved the great obstacle of the register transition" with covered technique — the whole aim of training was to make the seam disappear.

⭐ Yodeling runs it backwards: the seam is the music.

「a strong yodeler switches modal to falsetto four or five times per second, spanning more than an octave in each jump」

⭐⭐ voice-types says the register break is an obstacle; yodel says it is the technique — ⭐⭐ the flaw-into-signature lineage in its vocal apotheosis: the TB-303 was a hardware flaw appropriated, Auto-Tune a software excess appropriated, breathiness a physiological leak appropriated — and yodel appropriates the physiological seam everyone has. No one lacks a register break; yodel turned "the crack we all share" into "the entire technique of a culture."

⭐⭐ It began on the mountain pasture, not the stage

The word comes from German jodeln — "to utter the syllable jo". The earliest record dates to 1545: "the call of a cowherd from Appenzell" — a herder's call.

⭐⭐ Ranz des Vaches had a double identity: to humans it signalled "I am over there"; to cattle it was a recall trigger — "both as human signalling and as a Pavlovian recall trigger the cattle themselves recognised". ⭐⭐ One melody, two species of listeners (compare the voice entry's "the voice is the only instrument that carries meaning" — here even the cattle understand the meaning).

Until about 1830 yodeling was still "the sound of the meadow" — the opposite pole of church-choir music. In the 1830s it moved into theatres and music halls ("became popular in the 1830s as entertainment in theaters and music halls"), and Tyrolean touring troupes carried it to Europe and America.

⭐⭐ Why the break: wide leaps were built to carry

Register switching was not virtuosity but physics: each jump spans more than an octave. ⭐⭐ The chest voice's fundamental carries the thickness; the head voice's overtones carry the distance — the octave leap swaps transmission mode within a single breath. (Compare the singer's formant at 2,500–3,500Hz slipping into the orchestra's gap in vocal-production — yodel does not join the orchestra; it goes to valleys with no orchestra: the high leap is mountain song's singer's formant.)

⭐⭐ Instruments grow with the terrain (the instance "Walking the ridges to see the mountain view" — ridge-walkers knew: a freak sound on the flat, a necessity in the valley). Classic FM's advice is honest: "try doing the above exercises in a rocky gorge — really! The echo will make your high Es pop." — learn to yodel in a gorge, because the technique was built for gorges.

⭐⭐ Institutionalisation: from call to federation

1956Franzl Lang "Der fröhliche Wanderer" — the mass-media version

⭐⭐ 19th-century Swiss nation-building made yodeling a national symbol — "together with Alpine folk-costume (Trachten)": a functional pasture sound became, a century later, a national ID card (compare a cappella's history of misunderstanding: two 19th centuries — one appropriating a sound into tradition, one misreading a tradition into a configuration). In 1928 Jimmie Rodgers stitched yodel into country and blues, spawning the singing cowboy (Gene Autry, Roy Rogers) — the valley's recall melody became a frontier accent on screen.

⭐⭐ Overtone singing: the same throat, divided the other way

Yodel divides in time — rapid chest-falsetto switching, two parts taking turns across a melody; khoomei divides in space — fundamental and overtone sounding together, two parts stacked in one instant.

⭐ The mechanism: the vocal folds produce a fundamental rich in overtones; the mouth shape acts as a variable filter, selecting one overtone to amplify (compare vocal-production — the vocal tract as filter; khoomei turns that filter's dial to its extreme: ordinary mouths shape vowels roughly, khoomei mouths tune a single overtone finely).

⭐⭐ Two voices living in one throat — the narrowest boundary of "one instrument" on the whole site: an instrument = one source + one filter; khoomei splits one source's output into two audible pitches — for the first time an instrument divides in two without a second device (compare a cappella's voices carrying three jobs — that is three people doing three jobs; khoomei is one person sounding two pitches).

⭐⭐ Nostalgia: a word that owes its existence to a cattle song

In the 1690s, Swiss mercenaries serving as foreign guards for Louis XIV — on hearing Ranz des Vaches they reportedly deserted or died by suicide, and the French army banned its performance in Swiss units. The episode inspired Swiss physician Johannes Hofer's 1688 doctoral dissertation, which coined the medical term nostalgia.

⭐⭐ The English word "nostalgia" owes its existence, indirectly, to Alpine yodeling — ⭐⭐ the furthest-reaching case of an instrument shaping the world on this site: a cattle-call song ended up becoming the medical name for a universal human emotion. (And the cattle, presumably, never knew what they had done.)

⭐⭐ The Chinese parallel and ancient origins

⭐ China's cattle-calling songs (Waihai, Luokeng Tianhu) are functionally identical to Ranz des Vaches — herders call a melody across the ridge, and both cattle and humans recognise it (the instance "Waihai Cattle-Call Song"). ⭐ Mountain-song shouting is the folk version of the same physics (wide leaps carry far). ⭐ Contemporary echoes: "The Lonely Goatherd" in The Sound of Music draws on yodel; Jay Chou's "Mr. Magic" opens with a yodel figure.

⭐⭐ And ethnomusicologists believe yodeling's origins "can be traced back tens of thousands of years to ancient African nomadic hunter-gatherer societies" — beyond the Alps it is found in the Solomon Islands, Hawaii, Madagascar, Romania, Bulgaria and Africa. ⭐⭐ Echoing the voice entry's "singing predates spoken language": register switching may be one of humanity's oldest vocal techniques — the seam in every throat was the ancients' instrument.

Yodel and overtone singing 「range」 (two parts from one source, combined)

Neither yodeling nor overtone singing extends the voice's own range — it remains the combined span of all parts (roughly C2–C7). What they change is how that range is used: yodeling leaps rapidly between one person's chest voice and falsetto (more than an octave per jump, four or five jumps per second for a strong yodeler), splitting the same stretch of the range into two halves used in turn; overtone singing sounds a fundamental and an amplified overtone in the same instant, the mouth shape acting as a variable filter that selects one overtone from the vocal folds' rich spectrum. Yodeling was built for long-distance valley transmission (the wide leap swaps transmission mode within one breath — a freak sound on the flat, a necessity in the valley); overtone singing pushes the definition of 「one instrument = one source + one filter」 to its narrowest — one source outputs two audible pitches. Together they prove that the register break (passaggio), which voice-types treats as an obstacle for classification to cross, is here the music itself.
