The plucked section's last instrument happens to hold a mirror up to the struck one — because their shapes are nearly identical.

The kalong's box: "a hollow flat trapezoid, curved on the left, straight on the right, like half a yangqin." And the Qing statutes describe it: "the karnai, eighteen steel strings, shaped like a common yangqin."

⭐⭐ Rule ㊿: the same trapezoid, two answers — one retunes, the other rebuilds. The kalong and the yangqin are both trapezoid, many-stringed — but:

The one with the most strings

The kalong — the most strings of any Uyghur instrument Hollow trapezoid · many paired courses · a slider in the left hand Curved left, straight right Round hole, flower window Right-hand plectrum Left-hand slider Bar and movable bridges either side; hitch pins left, pegs right. The stand tilts it forward. Frame of mulberry and walnut, face and back of pine; about 42 cm front, 72 cm back, 50 cm wide, 13 cm deep. ⚠️ Schematic: courses and bridges compressed from the text; not to scale.

⭐ Three points:

1. It has the most strings. "The most stringed of the old Uyghur plucked instruments" — sixteen to eighteen courses, two strings each (other accounts give 17–22 pairs, or 30 / 23 / 34 strings; listed side by side). 2. The left hand is this page's hero. "The left hand holds a metal slider and presses or shifts it, producing ornaments" — the right hand speaks; the left hand supplies the tone of voice. 3. Its shape entered someone else's definition. The Qing statutes call it "shaped like a common yangqin" — ⚠️ and the truer relation is: alike, but not the same (see the figure below).

The slider in the left hand: a bird's call

⭐ The loveliest detail here is the name of that little tool:

"The slider is called koxitap in Uyghur, meaning 'birdsong'; it is said to have been created by folk players inspired by birds, first made of sheep's leg bone, later of metal."

⭐ Compare the zhamunie's "opinion-style name" (㊾): one puts the verdict on the instrument, the other on a small tool in the hand.

It retunes itself, every time

⭐ The yangqin chose to rebuild the instrument for free modulation. The kalong's answer is entirely different:

"The kalong is often tuned to the modal scale of the piece being played: for a piece with one flat, b is tuned to ♭b; for a piece with one sharp, f is tuned to ♯f."

It does not change the instrument; it changes what the strings are tuned to that day. — the cheapest possible solution to the hardest problem: if hands can retune, leave the structure alone.

The same trapezoid, two answers Alike in shape, rich in strings — different in sound and in key Kalong (plucked) Right: plectrum · Left: metal slider Key solved by retuning the strings Yangqin (struck) Right: bamboo hammers (struck) Key solved by rebuilding the instrument ⭐ Same shape problem, two views of cost: one pays with the hands, one pays with the instrument. ⚠️ Both drawn to show form and method, not to scale; see the yangqin's own page.

"The soul of Dolan muqam"

Its post is written in the names of the southernmost counties — Mekit, Bachu, Awat:

⭐ Two old names worth recording:

Old nameNote
Seventy-two-string pipapossibly what it was called when it reached the interior with the Mongol campaigns (recorded in the *Yuan Shi* and Liu Yu's *Xishi Ji*)
Karnaiits name in the Qing court's "Muslim music"; the statutes say "eighteen steel strings, shaped like a common yangqin"

⚠️ And one origin account: "the kalong was created by the famous Uyghur scholar and musician al-Farabi (c. 870–905)… in his *Book of Music* it is called 'mizaf,' and then it had forty-five strings" — a record that does not match today's sixteen to eighteen courses: another instrument whose documents and body disagree (compare the dutar and tanbur; names-history item ㉒).

Kalong range — the standard model, G to a²

Common misconceptions

Timbre, and how to hear it

Three cues:

1. Hear the "chime." The sources' words: "clear, bright, chiming" — and "close to the guzheng, but brighter." 2. Hear the slider. Press and shift, and ornament appears — the melody comes from the right hand, the flavour from the left. 3. Hear the slowness. "Suits slower pieces" — the instrument with the most strings is the one that excels at slow.
