Ondes Martenot
A keyboard and a ribbon bolted onto the theremin's idea — 「the instrument is first and foremost ourselves」

The previous page wrote the theremin — the hardest instrument to play in tune: no frets, no keys, no feedback.
This page, someone bolted a keyboard and a ribbon onto that same oscillator idea.
「The instrument is first and foremost ourselves.」 — Maurice Martenot, its inventor
⭐⭐ This page is the ondes Martenot — third in the electronic section. One line: a keyboard and a ribbon bolted onto the theremin's idea.
| Class | Assignment |
|---|---|
| HS class | Electrophone(heterodyne oscillators)· monophonic(one note at a time)· dual play: keyboard + ribbon |
| Origin | ⭐⭐ patented 1922 · produced 1928, by the French cellist-engineer Maurice Martenot(a WWI radio operator — ⭐ the same pedigree as Theremin) |
| The line | ⭐⭐ 「the instrument is first and foremost ourselves」 — it 「has a unique ability to capture a personal, almost ethereal sound」 |
| Bayin note | Three millennia outside the bayin — born in the age of radio |
⭐⭐ The main line: the theremin's problem, solved structurally
The last page called the theremin the hardest instrument to play in tune — no frets, no keys, no feedback.
The ondes Martenot runs the same heterodyne oscillators — but with two visible references bolted on:
| ⭐ keyboard | ⭐ ribbon(ruban) | |
|---|---|---|
| In charge of | accuracy(twelve-tone) | life(continuous glide) |
| How | press for a note; ⭐⭐ the keys shift laterally — press and wiggle for vibrato | 「a metal ring on the right index finger slides along a wire-and-ribbon in front of the keyboard」 |
| Who it resembles | a pianist | the voice · a violin's portamento |
⭐⭐ One instrument owns both the piano's discipline and the voice's freedom — two play-methods in parallel, chosen at will.
⭐ The inventor's pedigree matches Theremin's: both WWI radio operators, both struck by the oscillator's sound — ⭐⭐ but Martenot was a cellist, and he wanted 「the expressivity of a cello with the timbral range of radio oscillators」. So the theremin grew into an eerie alien voice, and the Martenot into a lyrical singing one.
⭐⭐ The left hand: every note is squeezed, live
The most practical passage here. The right hand owns pitch; the left hand owns how long, how hard, and how that note ends:
The left-hand drawer(switches · knobs · the touche d'intensité)… ⭐⭐ 「the intensity key responds to pressure, shaping dynamics like a bowed string instrument」.
⭐⭐ Every note's attack, sustain and release is squeezed out live by the left hand — dynamics are not a preset slider; they are the pressure of this hand, now.
⭐⭐ And that is why it sounds more alive than a typical synthesizer: a synth's envelope is a drawn curve; the Martenot's envelope is this hand's pressure, this moment.
⭐⭐ The monophony paradox
⭐⭐ But 「its expressive range exceeds that of many polyphonic instruments」 — because of continuous pitch control plus nuanced dynamics.
⭐⭐ Across this site: the saer plays every key on one melody string; the niutuiqin hugs the voice inside one octave — monophony is never the defect. What you can *say* with one note is. ⭐ A cellist built it; naturally it speaks one note at a time.
⭐⭐ A speaker with strings inside (unique on this site)
⭐⭐ An electronic instrument hiding a set of sympathetically vibrating strings — the third entry of the electronic section, and already an electro-acoustic hybrid. (The idea came back forty years later in guitar amps and electric-guitar feedback.)
⭐⭐ The Turangalîla: its most famous orchestral role
⭐⭐ Messiaen's affection made the Martenot part of 「the sonic identity of mid-century French modernism」; ⭐ Jolivet wrote it an entire concerto; ⭐⭐ Honegger's line is the fiercest: 「这件乐器有力量、有说话的速度,不是那些在乐队里阴沉竖着的烟囱管(低音巴松)可比的」— he thought it might replace the contrabassoon.
⭐⭐ And the Paris Conservatoire ran a formal class for it for decades — an electronic instrument inside the academy(compare the Zhihua Temple's pipe-and-sheng lineage: an instrument takes root when the academy takes it).
⭐⭐ Film and pop: from Lawrence to Radiohead
「Maurice Jarre 在《阿拉伯的劳伦斯》(1962)配乐里用了三台马特诺琴」, also in《人鬼情未了》; Elmer Bernstein used it as a solo voice(《捉鬼敢死队》等).
⭐⭐ And in pop: Jonny Greenwood(Radiohead) tours with one; Daft Punk used it — ⭐ from the Paris Opera(premiered 1928)to an electronic duo, ninety-six years without retiring.
⭐⭐ Division of labour with the theremin
| ⭐ theremin | ⭐ ondes Martenot | |
|---|---|---|
| Sound | heterodyne oscillators | the same heterodyne oscillators |
| Pitch control | hand position in the air(no reference) | keyboard + ribbon(reference and glide) |
| Dynamics | left hand's distance | the pressure-sensing intensity key |
| Character | ⭐ eerie, alien | ⭐⭐ lyrical, singing |
| Who plays it | a lone acrobat | a pianist's hands + a cellist's breath |
⭐⭐ One principle, two characters — the inventor's own instrument decides the personality.
Recap: three sentences on the ondes Martenot
| Q | A |
|---|---|
| ⭐ The key point | ⭐⭐ a keyboard and a ribbon bolted onto the theremin's idea — same heterodyne oscillators, but the keyboard owns accuracy(press for a note, wiggle for vibrato)and the ribbon owns life(continuous glide on a finger ring), both methods in parallel |
| ⭐⭐ The left hand | ⭐⭐ the touche d'intensité responds to pressure like a bowed string — attack, sustain and release squeezed live(dynamics are not presets, they are grip) |
| ⭐⭐ Monophony paradox | one note at a time, yet 「表现力超过很多复音乐器」— ⭐ a cellist built it; it speaks one note at a time |
| ⭐ Origin | ⭐ Maurice Martenot: cellist + WWI radio operator — 「大提琴的表现力 + 无线电的音色幅度」; patent 1922 · built 1928(premiere 1928-04-20; first work: Levidis, 1928-12-23) |
| ⭐⭐ The line | ⭐⭐ 「the instrument is first and foremost ourselves」 — 「a unique ability to capture a personal, almost ethereal sound」 |
| ⭐⭐ Speaker | ⭐⭐ the palme speaker resonates with strings — an electronic instrument hiding sympathetic strings |
| ⭐⭐ Classical | ⭐⭐ Messiaen's Turangalîla(1948) · Trois petites liturgies; Jolivet's full concerto; ⭐ Honegger: it might replace the contrabassoon; Paris Conservatoire class for decades |
| ⭐⭐ Film & pop | Jarre: three Martenots in Lawrence of Arabia · Ghost; Bernstein: Ghostbusters; ⭐ Jonny Greenwood(Radiohead)· Daft Punk |
| ⭐ vs theremin | ⭐⭐ the theremin owns eerie and alien; the Martenot owns lyrical and singing — same principle, two characters; the inventor's own instrument decides the personality |
| HS | Electrophone(heterodyne)· monophonic · dual play-method |
The theremin keeps its music in the air; the Martenot keeps half of it on the keyboard and half on the ribbon.
⭐⭐ And the intensity key under the left hand reminds you: the last word on 「how to say it」 stays with the 「ourselves」 the instrument is made of.

- ⭐⭐ 金句(发明人自己说的):「The instrument is first and foremost ourselves.(这件乐器首先是我们自己。)」
