The sheng's harmony and free reed
Sounding on both blow and draw — the only Chinese wind that plays harmony, and the ancestor of the harmonica and accordion

Fourteen aerophones are done in this section, and every one of them plays one note at a time.
Only this one does not.
⭐⭐ This page is the harmony overview for Sheng — three main lines: sounding on blow and draw, the three intervals of traditional harmony, and the free reed's journey west.
| Class | Assignment |
|---|---|
| HS class | Aerophone · free-reed · with definite pitch |
| Scope | ⭐⭐ the technique and acoustics overview for Sheng — no new instrument, only the technical threads from that entry gathered into three main lines: ① sounding on blow and draw ② the three intervals of traditional harmony ③ the free reed's journey west — ancestor of the harmonica and accordion |
| In short | ⭐⭐ blow and draw both sound(breathing does not stop the sound)|⭐⭐ traditional harmony = fifth above + octave above + fourth below(all three come from the harmonic series itself) |
| Bayin | gourd(⭐ a record of origin — early sheng used a gourd wind-chest; today's is bronze) |
⭐⭐ Line 1: it sounds on blow and draw — breathing does not stop the music
Ordinary winds push air one way. The sheng does not:
⭐⭐ Two consequences, both large:
① Breathing does not stop the sound. It sounds while you inhale — a phrase can run forever. Other winds must break to breathe; the sheng does not.
② Every reed sounds in both directions. 「簧片可独立振动而不受管体约束」— and that physical fact is exactly what later let the sheng "become" the harmonica and the accordion (see line 3).
⭐⭐ Blow-and-draw also built a whole family of techniques: four kinds of air vibrato (tongue, belly, throat, chest-belly); one mouth technique 「呼舌」is unique to the sheng; and flower-tongue comes in three grades(细 · 粗 · 爆).
⭐⭐ Line 2: the three intervals of traditional harmony — all from the harmonic series
The sheng plays harmony, but it does not stack just any interval:
⭐⭐ None of the three is arbitrary — each comes from the harmonic series itself:
| Interval | Where it sits in the series |
|---|---|
| ⭐ fifth above | the first new pitch above the second partial (the most natural consonance) |
| ⭐ octave above | the second partial again (the cleanest doubling) |
| ⭐ fourth below | the inversion of that fifth (the same fifth, an octave down) |
⭐⭐ The sheng's harmony grew out of one tube's natural overtones, not out of European harmony theory.
⭐⭐ And the physics holds it up: 「笙的独特之处在于其『一簧一音』的发声原理与自由簧结构,使其能同时演奏多个音符,具备和声与复调表现力」— ⭐ each tube has its own reed, so several tubes sound together (compare the dizi: one tube, six holes, one pitch at a time).
⭐⭐ On the modern sheng this reaches its limit: 「
⭐⭐ Line 3: the free reed travels west — ancestor of the harmonica and accordion
The whole timeline, without a gap:
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| antiquity | the sheng reaches Persia by the Silk Road |
| ⭐ 1740 | the missionary Johann Wilde brings a sheng to Europe |
| ⭐ 1777 | the French sinologist Amiot carries one from Beijing to Paris and explains its structure in《论中国音乐》 |
| ⭐ 1780 | the Danish scientist Kratzenstein rebuilds the organ reed on the sheng's principle |
| ⭐ 1810 | the French maker Grenié builds the orgue expressif |
⭐⭐ And the musicologist Curt Sachs gives the sheng the very first sentence of his History of Instruments:
⭐⭐ In one line: 「这些乐器均借鉴了笙的自由簧技术,簧片可独立振动而不受管体约束,从而实现了键盘化与便携化,有力推动了19 世纪浪漫主义音乐的普及与发展」— ⭐⭐ the organ's walk out of the church and into the pocket began with the sheng.
⭐⭐ A counter-intuitive detail: the hole chooses a reed, it does not change pitch
This one splits the sheng from the whole flute family:
⭐⭐ The hole selects which tube sounds; it does not alter the pitch. Flutes: one tube, six holes, the fingers change the pitch. Sheng: a dozen tubes, each with its own reed — ⭐⭐ the stopped tube is silent, the open tube sounds.
⭐⭐ And that is exactly why it can play harmony: stop several tubes at once (or leave them open), and several reeds speak together.
⭐⭐ The tuning tool is a drop of wax
A small detail, and a moving one:
⭐⭐ A bigger wax bead → heavier tongue → lower pitch; smaller → lighter → higher. ⭐ A sheng maker's entire intonation lives on a thread of wax.
⭐ And there was「银字制笙」— the《新唐书》records「银字制笙,以银作字,饰其音节」: ⭐ silver inlay on the tubes to mark the pitches.
⭐⭐ Sheng and yu: the big one lost to the small one
Two instruments of the same family, opposite fates:
The《说文解字》gives the yu 36 reeds.
⭐⭐ But by the Song:「
⭐ Why: the yu 「只用于雅乐,逐渐失去在历史上的重要作用」— an instrument tied to one repertoire retires with it. The sheng survived because it accompanied everything.
⭐⭐ The yu of "滥竽充数" really is gone.
⭐⭐ The Zeng Houyi sheng: the earliest specimens, and an even-numbered surprise
⭐⭐ Their reed counts are 14, 16 and 18 — even numbers — 「
⭐⭐ And: 「簧片为竹制,其形状、制作和调音方法,与铜簧片完全一样」— ⭐ those bamboo reeds from 2,400 years ago were tuned the way bronze reeds are tuned today.
⭐⭐ Four registers, plus a job no other wind has
⭐⭐ And one role nothing else has: 「在和其他乐器合奏的时候,能起到调和乐队音色、丰富乐队音响的作用」→ ⭐⭐ a large Chinese orchestra fields high, middle and low sheng — ⭐ a harmony instrument naturally splits into voices.
Recap: three sentences on the sheng
| Q | A |
|---|---|
| ⭐ The key point | ⭐⭐ it sounds on blow and draw — breathing never stops the line; ⭐⭐ each reed sounds both ways(the physical precondition for the harmonica) |
| ⭐⭐ Where the harmony comes from | ⭐⭐ traditional harmony = fifth above + octave above + fourth below — ⭐⭐ all three come from the harmonic series itself, grown out of one tube's overtones, not learned from European theory |
| ⭐⭐ One reed per note | ⭐⭐ each tube has its own reed(compare the dizi's six holes on one tube)→ several tubes sound together → polyphony to rival the organ |
| ⭐⭐ What the hole means | ⭐⭐ the hole chooses a reed, it does not change pitch — the stopped tube is silent, the open one sounds(the flute family is exactly the opposite) |
| ⭐ Tuning | ⭐⭐ 「簧片的音高依据簧舌尖上点粘蜡珠的大小来调节」 — big bead low, small bead high; ⭐ the tool is a drop of wax |
| ⭐⭐ The westward line | Persia → ⭐1740 Wilde → ⭐1777 Amiot《论中国音乐》→ ⭐1780 Kratzenstein → ⭐1810 Grenié → harmonica, accordion and reed organ follow |
| ⭐⭐ Sachs' verdict | the opening of the History: 「
| ⭐⭐ Sheng and yu | ⭐⭐ 「竽,笙之大者」(sheng small and few-reeded / yu large and many-reeded, 36 reeds in the Han record)→ Song: 「只有笙色而无竽色」→ ⭐ the yu, tied to ritual music, retired; the sheng, accompanying everything, survived |
| ⭐ Earliest finds | ⭐⭐ the Zeng Houyi sheng(c. 433 BC, six specimens, 2,400+ years old): 14/16/18 reeds — even(the texts record odd numbers); bamboo reeds tuned exactly like bronze ones |
| ⭐ Asian family | Tang-era arrival in Japan(the Shōsōin keeps Tang 17-tube sheng and yu)→ the Japanese shō sounds 11-note chords · Korean saenghwang · Lao-Thai khaen · Indonesian genggong |
| ⭐ Tone | 「高音清脆透明 · 中音柔和丰满 · 低音浑厚低沉」+ ⭐⭐ it colours and binds the orchestra(high / middle / low sheng in the big ensemble) |
| Bayin | gourd(⭐ a record of origin: early chest was a gourd; wood after the Tang; bronze finally replaced wood) |
「我有嘉宾,鼓瑟吹笙」— the sheng's name has travelled three thousand years inside the Book of Songs.
⭐⭐ Its ancient character 「龢」is the character for "harmony" — this instrument was built for "together" from its name onward.
